School: Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Social studies (Teaching) at Kenyatta University

My name is Miriam and I live in the Kibera Slum in Kenya. I come from a single parent family, having lost my father at the age of 3. My mother works in the slum selling chapati bread on the roadside. She makes very little money to support my two siblings and I. I attended a small primary school in Kibera. There was never enough books or desks for the students, and often the teachers would not turn up to class so my education was poor. Despite these challenges, I was able to score well on my final primary school exams. When I grow up I want to be a doctor so that I can help people with diseases, and I’d even like to build a children’s home for children in need.
